As an Iron Ranger, fisherman Jack, much like his father before him, loved the wilderness, authentic people, his family and cooking. Jack, by example, instilled these passions in his wife of sixty years, Sally (nee Friedman) Flax (a long-time peace activist, retired from the U of M); and all four of his children, James, (a psychiatrist), Kate, (a healer), John, (an actor and director) and Richard, (a chef, caterer and owner of Riches Kicken Cafe at 3445 Cedar Ave. in Mpls). Jack also leaves behind two daughters-in-law, CeCe Ritter and Pamela Gregg Flax; one son-in- law, Robert Breer; two granddaughters, Justine Flax and Sally Breer; two sisters, Beverly Shiff and Lorraine Anders; one sister-in-law, Betty Flax; nieces and nephews and many good friends from all walks of life, from around the globe. The family asks that you donate money to the Lake Atitlan Library of Panajachel Guatemala in lieu of flowers. Checks can be sent to Flax, 1920 S. First St. #1201, Mpls., Minn. 55454. A small, private party will be held to celebrate his life. He died as he lived with total acceptance of whatever came his way. Jack died peacefully October 11, 2006.
